Any hour, every day
Emergency electrician for St Marys Bay, 24/7
Electrical emergencies do not keep office hours. If you smell burning, see sparks or scorching, or the power is off and will not come back, call 021 156 4005. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for homes and businesses in St Marys Bay and right across Auckland.
Call straight away if you notice
Some electrical problems can wait for a convenient morning. These cannot, and our phone is answered for them at any hour:
- a burning or hot plastic smell from a power point, switch, light fitting or the switchboard
- sparks, crackling, or scorch marks around a socket or plug
- a circuit breaker or main switch that trips again the moment you reset it
- water that has reached wiring, a light fitting or the switchboard, after a leak or a storm
- a tingle or shock from a tap, an appliance or a metal fitting
- no power at your place when the neighbours still have theirs
If anything is actually on fire, get everyone out and call 111 first. If a power line is down, keep well away, treat it as live, warn the neighbours and call your electricity supplier.
Is it your installation or the network?
When the lights go out, the first question is whose problem it is. Look along the street: if the neighbours are dark too, the fault is almost certainly on the network, not in your house. Vector's power outage page lets you check your address for a current outage and report one if it is not listed. Unplanned outages are often caused by weather, trees, birds or a vehicle hitting a pole, and planned work is notified to affected customers up to four working days ahead.
If you are the only one without power, look at your switchboard. A tripped main switch or breaker that resets and stays on may have been a passing overload; one that will not stay on means a fault on your side of the meter, and that is where we come in. The service line from the boundary to your meter is also the property owner's responsibility rather than Vector's. Anyone in the household who relies on powered medical equipment should be registered as medically dependent with your electricity retailer, whatever the cause. For faults that come and go rather than stop everything, our fault finding and repairs service is the better fit.
What happens when you call
Tell us what you can see, hear and smell
The address, how to get in, and what is happening: heat, smoke, a smell, water, a noise, which circuits are off. You do not need to open anything up or get close to the fault to describe it.
Make it safe
On site, the first job is to make the installation safe, isolating the faulty circuit so the rest of the property can have power back where that is safe.
Fix it, or plan the fix
Where a fault can be repaired there and then, it is. Where a proper repair needs parts or a longer job, we explain what we found and agree the next step with you before going further.
Test and certify
Repairs to the fixed wiring are tested, and you receive the certificate the work requires.
While you wait for us
If it is safe to reach the switchboard, turn off the main switch, or the breaker for the affected circuit. Stay away from anything that is hot, wet or smoking, and keep children and pets clear. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips straight away, and on an older board never replace a blown fuse wire with thicker wire to get the power back. Remember that the cable coming into the house from the street stays live even with your main switch off.
In apartment buildings and offices, let the building manager or body corporate know too, since the meters and main switches may be in a locked shared room we will need to reach. And if a night-time fault turns out to be a tired old fuse board, we can talk about a switchboard upgrade once the emergency is over.
After-hours questions
Do you really answer at night and at weekends?
Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on 021 156 4005.
Do you attend businesses after hours?
Yes. We do commercial as well as residential work, so a shop, office or hospitality business with a fault after closing can call the same number.
Is a tingle from a tap or appliance an emergency?
Treat it as one. WorkSafe describes a tingling sensation as usually a warning of danger: stop using whatever caused it, switch it off at the wall or the switchboard if you safely can, and call us.
Can I keep resetting a breaker that trips?
Once, after unplugging everything on the circuit, is reasonable. If it trips again straight away, leave it off. WorkSafe's advice is that a breaker which continues to trip is a job for a licensed electrician.
The whole street is out. Can you help?
Not with the network itself, which is Vector's. Check and report the outage with them. If your power stays off after the street's comes back on, call us, or use our contact page for anything that can wait until morning.
